I feel a wave of relief in my body as I read your response to the Globe article, parents, and our culture, as well. Another point I'd like to add is that these kids are being handed yesterday's news! They are being stressed with information that won't be relevant in 15 minutes!
I'm happy to report that an evolutionary movement in education is underway. Not a repair of a system that has served its purpose and expired, but a new construct for learning that embraces today's world and today's children.
Educators and lerning pioneers are meeting each other, relieved to find that they're not alone, but part of a global movement intended to set children, infact, everyone, free to pursue learning in a way that supports our innate strengths and allows for team work and full self-expression while contributing to society and the world.

As the parent of a second grader, I have ALREADY discussed the amount of homework with other parents in the class ...For working parents, by the time you get DD or DS home from afterschool it is already almost 6:00 and then 1/2 hour worth of homework (not including 20 minutes of independent reading), dinner and bath - it is hard to find time to just enjoy our kids.

First off, it's schoolwork, not "homework".

Homework is work done that makes the home better for all family members.

Teachers who must assign schoolwork for home fail to do their jobs during school hours.

Children should get only two kinds of after-school work, 1) math drills 2) research on a topic that expands depth of learning in a field.

No teacher should assign schoolwork to be done at home during elementary school years, except for mathematics and only beginning with the 2nd grade.

Parents should leverage after-school hours to expand their children's minds and bodies through athletics, music performance, acting, dance, civics, volunteering.

Public Educators do not know what they are doing.

Thus, each subsequent generation of Americans grows up as a mess and unleashed to make more messes.
